The GMVA Centre of Excellence (CoE) kicked off in February 2015 with it's first intake consisting of four full time athletes. The CoE program is a purely skills based training group with the individual athletes get very small group and very specific skill development. The CoE trains 5 mornings per week at SVC for two and a half hours per day. They also lift weights 4 sessions per week, have to State League trainings and play matches on Saturdays. We are replicating the training load that the athletes will eventually experience at their college, club and hopefully National Team in the future.
On court skills training is a big part of the training program but we also work very hard on strength and conditioning for the athletes to try and increase their jump and ready their bodies for the rigors of international volleyball. CoE athletes lift weights in four session per week, one at Integrate Training and three at the State Volleyball Centre.
As skill acquisition and improvement is such a big focus there are a few training aids we use to help in these areas:
- Video delay loops
- Video slow motion comparisons
- Speed guns for service and attack
- Black out reception curtains
- Elastic service and black targets
- Boxing block pads
- Service and attack boxes
- Varied net heights, up to 275cm
- Hoola Hoop blocking aids
- Resistance band speed work
The CoE program also has a number of casual training athletes, that train one or two days per week due to work or university commitments. These athletes are able to choose from Monday, Wednesday or Friday sessions as the Tuesday and Thursday sessions are purely for the Full Time athletes. During the annual cycle National Team members Jordan Richards, Trent O'Dea and Thomas Hodges have use GMVA CoE as their training base while in Melbourne which is a fantastic compliment for the program. All three of the players were GMVA athletes before making the National Team so it's nice to see them come back to their roots when they have the chance.
Head Coach: Luke Campbell, Olympian and Level 3 Volleyball Australia Coach.
