The GMVA Centre of Excellence (CoE) kicked off in February 2015 with it's first intake consisting of four full time athletes. The CoE program has grown from a very small skills based training group into a full squad with both skill and full game style training and scrimmage. The CoE trains 5 days per week at SVC for two hours per day. They also lift weights 4 sessions per week, have to State League trainings and play matches on Saturdays. We are replicating the training load that the athletes will eventually experience at their college, club and hopefully National Team in the future.
On court skills training is a big part of the training program but we also work very hard on strength and conditioning for the athletes to try and increase their jump and ready their bodies for the rigors of international volleyball. CoE athletes lift weights in four session per week at the State Volleyball Centre Gym.
As skill acquisition and improvement is such a big focus there are a few training aids we use to help in these areas:
- Video delay loops
- Video slow motion comparisons
- Online video portals
- Professional stats analysis
- Speed guns for service and attack
- Black out reception curtains
- Elastic service and black targets
- Boxing block pads
- Service and attack boxes
- Varied net heights, up to 275cm
- Hoola Hoop blocking aids
- Resistance band speed work
The CoE program caters for players with varied goals. Some want to play in the National Team, go to college in the USA or Canada, others will study here in Australia and some just want to balance their working life with further progression in their sport of choice. Everyone future is unique and all athletes receive the same level or care and attention at training.
Head Coach: Luke Campbell, Olympian, Level 3 Volleyball Australia Coach and FIVB Level 2 Coach.
