This first semester of college life for me has been a really exciting experience so far. I am currently at the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina, and seeing as coming here has been my first time in America ever it was a big culture shock upon my arrival. I am in quite a rural area, and the surrounding environment here is very different from back home in Melbourne.
The first few weeks were definitely difficult for me, as I got homesick from day one and found it difficult to find a lot of motivation. However, that all changed the more I got to know people arround me, especially my teammates who really do become a second family. This relationship with the team made my college experience so enjoyable at all, and made difficult things like conditioning or schoolwork so much easier. Though we are not in season yet, I can already tell that our games in our conference are going to be really exciting, and we are projected to be one of the top teams in our conference.
Our season opener (which is just a friendly) is against Long Beach State, who are currently ranked number one in the country. With two U.S national players on their squad, this is an awesome opportunity for me to play against the best players I have ever faced. On the academic side of things, college for me has been relatively similar to highschool, being that my college is a Liberal Arts school. This basically means you have to take a number of classes outside of your major subjects. I have not had any major subjects this semester, so I am also really excited to finally start studying them and move on from some of the coursework that does not interest me as much.
All in all my experience so far has been a positive one, and I look forward to what the next college semester will bring especially in terms of volleyball.
